How do I erase the listing of web pages visited from my browser history?

True, this isn't the toughest or most interesting question we've ever tackled, but enough people write in requesting an answer that we felt it was high time for a little Browser 101.

Deleting your web history is a pretty straightforward process. Here are instructions for the four most popular browsers:

  • Netscape Navigator - Under the "Tools" tab, scroll down to "Options." Click "Privacy" on the left, then click "Clear" under "Page History."
  • Internet Explorer - Under the "Tools" tab, scroll down to "Internet Options." A separate window will pop up. Click the "Clear History" button.
  • Safari - Under the "History" tab, scroll down to "Clear History."
  • Firefox - Under the "Tools" tab, scroll down to "Options." Click the "Clear History" button.

Protecting your online security is important -- check out these Twelve Privacy Tips for suggestions. It's also a good idea to clear your browser's cookies and cache every so often. Doing so will help protect your privacy and improve your browser's performance.
