The Archive's Double Nobel section lists all the laureates who have been awarded a Nobel more than once. It's a pretty short list! That's where we discovered that the International Committee of the Red Cross has won the most Nobel Prizes. The Red Cross received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917, 1944, and 1963.
The only other people or organizations that have received more than one Nobel Prize are Marie Sklodowska Curie (for physics in 1903 and chemistry in 1911), Linus Pauling (for chemistry in 1954 and peace in 1962), John Bardeen (for physics in 1956 and 1972), Frederick Sanger (for chemistry in 1958 and 1980), and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (for peace in 1954 and 1981). Marie Curie was not only the first person to win two Nobel Prizes; she was also the first woman ever to be honored with a Nobel.
We double-checked our facts on the official web site and used thelaureate search feature to confirm each prize winner.
The Nobel Prize (Swedish: Nobelpriset) is a Sweden-based international monetary prize. The award was established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist and inventor of the dynamite Alfred Bernhard Nobel[1][2]. It was first awarded in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace in 1901. An associated prize, The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was instituted by Sweden's central bank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969.[3] The Nobel Prizes in the specific disciplines (physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature) and the Prize in Economics, which is commonly identified with them, are widely regarded as the most prestigious award one can receive in those fields.[3]
A recipient of the Nobel Prize, a laureate, earns a gold medal[4], a diploma[5] bearing a citation and a sum of money[6]. The amount of the money awarded is depending on the income of the Nobel Foundation that year[7]. In 2009 the amount was 10 million SEK per prize[8]. If there are several laureates in one prize the money will be split equally among them.[9].
